I am currently watching the series with the bounts. Its pretty good. I am watching the dubs on cartoon network. Ruki'as and everyone voice actors are really good.

The subs thre me for a loop. I completely lost the story when they arrived in the soul society. Couldn't remember captains name or positions. What a mess. The story isn't complex, but you need to at least be able to follow it.

Elfen Lied - Sad Story

The essentials of Elfen Lied are as follows. A teenage girl, having suffered horrible abuse and deprivation for most of her life, develops multiple personality disorder. One personality is a gentle, pre-verbal little girl who communicates entirely by meowing like a cat. The other is older and has lost all ability to empathize with most humans. She can talk, but rarely does, and seems incapable of dealing with others without lashing out at them.

Of course, her abusive family is not really a family, it's a shady, top secret government project. And she doesn't exactly live at home, it's more like a hidden fortress. And when I said she "lashes out," well, she mostly does this with her uncanny ability to decapitate people from a distance just by thinking about it. As she's understandably a bit angry at the world by now, she does this quite often.

Elfen Lied is extremely well made and very effective, but it's not quite a work of high-minded seriousness. When this girl runs away from home (i.e., lays waste to the government fortress she's imprisoned in) she is eventually taken in, while in her cat-girl incarnation, by a boy who, for some reason, owns a large house. This house is apparently a magnet for girls, because two already live there with him.h

Any seasoned anime aficionado will instantly recognize the genre which Elfen Lied is playing on here: the clueless young man surrounded by adoring young women who are all in love with him. American fans unceremoniously call this the "harem" genre. But Elfen Lied's use of this genre isn't entirely gratuitous, because this situation provides the main character with a family of sorts. Without the attendant "comic relief" (a misnomer, since it actually serves to heighten the tension, not relieve it), and without this opportunity to develop what is essentially a mute character, Elfen Lied would be a thin exercise in violence. What at first seems gratuitously tacked-on turns out to be the emotional core of the series. This is Elfen Lied's greatest strength, in fact: it follows convention but its apparently gratuitous elements are carefully aligned to serve the subtext of the story, which is simply the tragic tale of an angry little girl.

There seems to be a tradition in anime of thinly-veiled stories of abuse like Elfen Lied (another recent example is Gunslinger Girl), in which an abused child is given extraordinary powers with which to express her anger in suitably exciting and often gruesome style. The best of these stories, and Elfen Lied is probably one of them, are nearly allegorical; the distance between the mundane (and therefore more awful) and the fantastical (and therefore more gruesome) images of the story are so separate from each other that one has the sense of watching two stories unfold simultaneously.

Elfen Lied is a very violent show, but it is also a sad, emotionally raw story rendered in extremely beautiful visuals and with an excellent, atmospheric soundtrack. The stark contrast between its generous empathy for an abused girl and its gory expression makes for an intense and visceral experience.

I have the Yamato Kanu and I like it a lot. But I would have to pass o most
of these figures... too revealing lol... I already get a lot of questions and
weird faces when someone enters my room and looks at my Kanu or other anime girls.
Imagine the reaction if I had that nude Sonsaku too... but I have to say they
look awesome ^.^. If the Kanu in the white dress gets made into a PVC it would
be hard do resist.

These are just sooo cute.

Folks in Japan can get these at all Circle K convenient stores from the 22nd of November and should be available everywhere else during the second week of December. Each costs 500 yen.

Mikuru is my fave - awesomely cute and going in the car.

There are two different variations of each character. Yuki has removable cloak, hat and wand.

All characters are articulated to a certain extent. None of the parts are glued which has enabled Good Smile to keep production costs low while delivering incredibly good quality considering these are trading figures.

Haruhi looks good in Kyons uniform.

The cheerleader Haruhi is the secret one - not sure if I'm allowed to upload this one ^^;
The hair and face can be taken apart and placed on different characters - which is what I done for the cheerleader Haruhi.

Small and incredible cute - if these were edible then they'd be gone in no time.

I've had a few conversations with folks about the Nendoroid series who tell me that they really don't like the super deformed style - are these up your alley or you prefer the standard scale PVCs?

Rumor: Soul Calibur 4 HDD Takeover?

All you media fiends conquering space on your PS3 or 360 better hope this isn't true.

According to a post at Neogaf.com, online store PlayAsia.com listed that Soul Calibur 4 requires 6.7 gigs of game data plus nearly 2 gigs for game saves. For the 360 version, a HDD is required to play the game. Be aware that the webpage is in Japanese if you want to check it out.

Whether this rumor is true or not, we'll definitely have more than enough details for about Soul Calibur 4 for in our E3 2008 coverage coming up soon. For now, feast your eyes on these.

Hakaba Kitarou Review

The original Hakaba Kitarou (later renamed to Gegege no Kitarou) was one of the original pioneers in anime and manga, even before the legacy of Osamu Tezuka. Ever since it was serialized in 1959, it’s spawned five lengthy television-series, eight movies and one live-action movie. The problem is that all of these reduced the Kitarou-franchise to a kiddie-series. Enter Hakaba Kitarou, in its Noitamina time-slot as it attempts to remove all of the “kiddie”-roots from the franchise. And believe it or not, but it succeeds pretty well.

The result is a very rare combination between horror and comedy. But this series mostly stands out because it’s so refreshingly different from usual anime. The art really tries to go its own way, with character-designs in an original style, and a continuous filter, reminiscent of Mononoke. There are lots of interesting camera-angles and monster-designs, which make sure that this series turns into a visual feast that doesn’t rely on moe whatsoever.

This is also one series that completely shatters the boundaries between good and evil. It may seem like that Kitarou is the main character, and therefore the good guy, and yet he likes to play cat-and-mouse games with his victims, and he doesn’t even seem to care whether these victims end up dead or not. Nezumi Otoko, on the other hand, may be the series’ villain (he acts mostly out of greed and for money), and yet he stands so far away from the stereotypical anime villain. This guy is often rational and he doesn’t try to look as cool or evil as possible. He’s also often friendly, although he’s ready to betray any friend in favour of his well-being.

The same goes for all other side-characters that appear in one the different stories that have been put into the eleven episodes that this series consists of. Everyone is somewhere in the grey spectrum between good and evil. And all of the major side-characters have multiple sides and hardly have any chance to get boring. I’d also like to mention the ease at which this series seems to be able to kill off its characters. Seriously, some deaths really come from nowhere.

And that brings me to another good point of this series. Not every episode may have one, but the plot-twists will leave you guessing, and some will come as a huge shock, exactly what a horror-series should be. You can see that the writers have a lot of fun while writing this series, and building it up. Hakaba Kitarou has a delightful air of unpredictability that you hardly ever see in anime.

Overall, if you’re looking for something different, then Hakaba Kitarou is the way to go. Don’t get fooled into thinking that this is a series for kids. Simplistic character-designs don’t automatically make a series a kiddie-one. At eleven episodes, there’s hardly any chance to get bored. This is one reason why I like winter-seasons. Because not many popular series air, it’s the perfect chance for the less popular and under-looked anime that try to be different to get a chance. 2007 had Master of Epic, and 2008 continues this tradition with Hakaba Kitarou

Anime: Something Fun For Everyone

“I think the fact that I could still watch a Warner Bros cartoon and find it awesome at 21 says something about how those cartoons were the type of things that everyone can enjoy. Nowadays, it’s very hard to find that sort of cartoon that can transcend age and experience (lol politics): We either have stuff for the young, stuff for the not so young (adults from 20-35ish, maybe), and nothing really for the older adults. I think anime is the closest thing that we have to meeting that.”

I still watch Western (I still wonder why these “West” and “East” designations are used for hemispheres; it’s so arbitrary) cartoons when given the chance, and I get a kick out of some of the newer shows out there (the choices of these shows are also arbitrary; i.e., stuff I like off the top of my head), and the Pixar works are always very awesome. Each of these shows has a different target audience, but resound with me in some way, more often in a humorous matter than anything else (in the case of the Boondocks, I am in that target age range, so results may vary in the future). And at the same time, there are anime for certain target segments that tends to resound with those segments alone [like Pretty Cure for girls and men in their 20s (oh shi-), and the “adult stuff”]. So on further looking at that statement, I’m probably talking out of my ass there, or at least showing off my lack of knowledge. Doesn’t mean that I’m not standing by the statement about it, so let’s go on.

Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl

Every teenager, in some respect, has to deal with meddling parents. But Yawara is a special case. Her grandfather Jigoro, whom she lives with, has been training her since childhood to be the guiding star of women's judo. A former judo prodigy, he works her relentlessly, planning for the day when his young protégé will make her spectacular debut on the judo stage. His goal is the Olympic Gold in women's judo (even though the category doesn't yet exist) and eventually the coveted National Merit Award. And he'll do anything to achieve it, be it sneaking into her room to purge it of girly, non-judo distractions, creating a rival, intimidating potential suitors, or scheming to force her into judo matches. Yawara, like any good teenager, is rebelling; all she wants is to be a normal girl. She skips practice, wears makeup (the horror!), practices cooking, and most of all, goes looking for love. But being normal isn't easy when it seems the cosmos themselves are plotting against you. Her manufactured rival, one of Japan's richest socialites, won't leave her alone, a nosy reporter becomes obsessed with her potential after witnessing her takedown of a purse snatcher, and even the guy she's attracted to turns out to be a judo coach. It seems Yawara is destined to be a judo girl whether she likes it or not.

The 7th Annual Japanese Otaku Awards were presented before a standing-room-only crowd at Tokyo's Loft/Plus One hall on January 5. The organizers describe it as an informal "event of the otaku, by the otaku, for the otaku" to commemorate the things, people, and events that left a lasting impression on the otaku world in the past year. A panel of eight judges, led by novelist/manga creator Hōsai Tsuruoka and columnist/radio commentator Shunichi Karasawa, first nominated several entries in fields ranging from paranormal phenomena to fujoshi (boys-love otaku) interests.

Then the panel held a free-form discussion to determine the winners of the awards presented by each judge, as well as one Grand Prix winner.

Opening: "Kokoro no Tamago" by Buono! - The new Hello Project (and the fanboys go wild) unit's first songs... not really that great, but I wasn't expecting anything great. Animation is excellent — Satelight got quite a group of animators this time around. Amu-chan kawaii yo Amu-chan!

Ending: "Honto no Jibun" by Buono! - Better than the OP, lyrics fit the theme of Shugo Chara very well.
